National Benchmark Test (NBT)

National Benchmark Test Intake

National Benchmark Test NBT measure your academic readiness for University.

The NBT Project is a national initiative run by Universities South Africa (formerly known as Higher Education South Africa: HESA). Some South African universities use the NBTs in addition to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) for access to higher education, while others use the tests to determine the kind of learning support a student will need during their studies.

FYI: Most of the universities requires you to write NBTs therefore be aware of the National Benchmark Test Date.

How to Register Online 2023-2024

The steps are as follows

Visit the Unisa web registration page, click here to open the page.
Choose the qualification level and then click “Go“.
Enter your student number in the block provided and the other details as required. (If you don’t have a student number you won’t be able to continue. You’ll need to apply online for admission.)
Check your personal details on screen. Change any contact details that are missing or incorrect. It is very important to provide your correct address and cellphone numbers. Incorrect information may delay the delivery of your study material and prevent you from receiving important information from the university.
Click on the modules from the drop-down list for which you want to register. Ensure that you meet all the qualification requirements for your selected modules. You must
- meet all the pre-requisites and co-requisites for the selected module
- enter the correct module code
- select the correct semester (1 = first semester; 2 = second semester)
* The language of tuition for each module is indicated in the module information.
Do not exceed the prescribed number of modules per semester or year, as this may result in a delay in your registration being processed. Unisa retains the right to remove modules based on the number of credits allowed per semester and in accordance with the fees paid. Please take note of the maximum period of time you have to complete your qualification.
Calculate your fees
- Use the fee quotation link on the Unisa website (http://www.unisa.ac.za/feequote) to obtain a quote for the cost of your modules.
- Note the minimum fee that must be paid before Unisa will process your registration. If these fees are more than you can afford, remove modules until you can afford the fees.
- You can make payment online, using the web credit card payment method.
- If you don’t have a credit card, you can use one of the Unisa payment methods listed on this page . Retain your proof of payment in case of enquiries.

As an applicant, what do I need to know before I apply?

Applicants need to check that they qualify for admission and that they have the necessary documents ready to upload during the application process.

And should make sure:

that I meet the statutory and college admission requirements for my qualification(s) of choice.
that I meet the minimum academic points score (APS) for my qualification(s) of choice.
that I have a valid e-mail address and cellphone number, and I accept that Unisa will communicate with me during the application process using this e-mail address and cellphone number. Please ensure that you provide only one e-mail address and one cellphone number during the application process.

All applicants beginning a new qualification must upload all the needed documents, which generally consists of the listed below:

Copy of your official tertiary academic record(s) (if applicable) (internet copies will not be accepted)
Copy of your ID document (RSA students) or ID/passport (international students)

NSFAS Application Cycles and how to apply

In addition to the online application and walk-in assistive capture applications, the National Certificate Vocation (NC(v)) is available every year at the beginning of semester 1 and trimester 1.
DHET calendar trimesters 2 & 3 in May & September, also walk-in assistive capture applications
A walk-in application for assistive capture will be accepted during Semester 2 from June to July

TVET Colleges’ NSFAS Requirements for 2023

This bursary scheme is only available to South African citizens
A student must be registered at a public TVET college in South Africa that offers PLP, NC(V), or Report 191 programmes.
An NSFAS evaluation of a student’s financial need will determine eligibility for financial assistance.
Upon returning to the College, all students must demonstrate proven and acceptable academic performance (academically deserving) in accordance with the College’s progress policy or the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher).
It is not advisable for candidates to enroll in a qualification that duplicates previous state-funded learning
The maximum family income threshold is R350,000 per annum, and applicants who are admitted/receive a firm offer for enrolment in a college qualify.

NSFAS Funded Courses or Programmes-TVET Colleges NSFAS Application 2024-2025

Public TVET Colleges gives a very huge range of courses/programmes that have been developed to respond to the scarce skills needed by employers. Courses differ in duration from a short course of a few hours to formal diploma courses of three years.

Naturally the costs of the courses also differ considerably but it is important to recall that Department of Higher Education and Training programmes are subsidised by 80% of the delivery cost and for the remaining 20% that would be paid by the student, many full bursaries are obtainable.

NSFAS funds Ministerial approved programmes and students must refer to each college, however the generally funded programmes are below:

APS simply means Admission Points Score. The Admission Points Score (APS) is a simple calculation method that universities use to determine whether or not prospective students are qualified for a qualification.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ADMISSION POINT SCORE (APS)

Prospective students will need to meet the minimum APS in order to be considered for a specific program.

Normally, each matric topic for which you write an exam awards you points. Your grade in each subject will determine how many points you receive for that course. The sum of the points you acquire for each course makes up your APS score.

HOW TO CALCULATE UNISA APS. A SIMPLE WAY FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

For Prospective students to calculate their APS for UNISA, they will need to add their six subject percentages.

If incase you have more than six subjects, excluding Life Orientation.
The University of South Africa need you to have six subjects in total when calculating your APS for UNISA.

Generally, for each matric subject you write, you get a point. The points you get for each course will depend on the percentage you score in that particular subject. The APS is the total points you accumulate from each course.

The difficulties associated with the current allowance payment technique will be resolved by this new payment method, which will also properly account for the considerable amount of money that needs to be distributed and the continuously growing number of recipients.

With the estimated number of NSFAS-funded students at 900,000, not all these students will be granted onto the new payment system ( Nsfas Banking Account) immediately, the scheme will pilot this solution with a set number of students first, following which the full roll-out will occur in a phased-in approach. REGISTRATION DETAILS

1.1 Registration opens on 15 January 2024 until 9 February 2024 (only online, off-campus registration will be allowed) for
returning/continuing students.

1.2 Access registration at https://www.uj.ac.za/admission-aid/registration/ and follow the step-by-step guide.

1.3 You will only be able to register off-campus. The University cannot guarantee your space, and it is important to register as
soon as possible to secure a place. Note that the registration dates may be adjusted in which case such details
published on the UJ website.

1.4 Students who have only second-semester modules that are outstanding will also be required to register during the
registration period in January 2024.

1.5 Please take note, that in the case of compulsory modules that have not been passed in the previous year, the registration
system has been set up to register those compulsory modules first. You may not register for modules where prerequirements are not met.

1.6 Students in contact programs who interrupt their studies are required to apply for special permission from the relevant
Faculty/College to continue their studies. Continuation of studies, after an interruption, is not guaranteed and may be subject
to conditions since certain qualifications are being phased out. For a full list of programs being phased out, please
consult your respective faculty yearbook https://www.uj.ac.za/faculties/.

1.7 Students may not attend lectures for a program or module if they are not registered for it.

1.8 Students must review their proof of registration, to ensure that their modules/program registration is correct for the
entire year. It remains the responsibility of the student to ensure correct registration.

Step 1: Go to the University of Johannesburg’s website and click the Admission > Apply for Admission link for applicants seeking undergraduate or graduate admission (UJ Online Application). Following that, you can choose your course of action and proceed to the registration, application, and document uploading stages. This link will take you to the Online Application System at the University of Johannesburg.

Step 2: Register for classes at the University of Johannesburg online. After clicking the link in step one above, you will be directed to the University of Johannesburg Online Application System form, where you must enter all required information. Individuals who are applying for the first time have never used the University of Johannesburg’s online application system before and do not already have accounts that allow them to log in using their username and password. If this is your first time applying, you must first register. You must provide your name, email address, password, the type of program you’re applying for, and your qualification mode during the registration stage.

Step 3 requires you to upload supporting documentation; all new qualification candidates must complete this step (all first-time applicants and University of Johannesburg students starting a new qualification). The application deadline coincides with the deadline for uploading the required files. Materials received after the application deadline will not be accepted. Scanners and other electronic equipment are not available at the University of Johannesburg. Before beginning the UJ Online Application procedure, please ensure that your documents have been scanned and uploaded to an electronic device.

After receiving your student ID, the fourth step is to pay the application fee through the University of Johannesburg. Use the reference number for your application fee, as well as your University of Johannesburg student number (ie STUDENT NUMBER 5370810030). After you have paid the fee, your application will be considered and processed. Please be aware that this fee is non-refundable.
