Enoch Godongwana, the minister of finance, announced increases to social grants that do not correspond to inflation.

According to Godongwana, the R58.6 billion in medium-term funding will “allow for inflationary increases” to permanent grants. Even yet, the awards won’t actually accelerate the current annual growth rate of 5.7%. Moreover, the Foster Care Grant has increased by less than 2%.

Changes to grants this year:

  • an increase of 5.3 percent. The Disability Grant will go up from R1,890 to R1,980 in April and then to R1,990 in October

  • the grant for child support will rise from R460 to R480—an increase of 4.3 percent.\

Godongwana also introduced the Extended Child Support Grant, a new social award for double orphans, “to promote the care of orphans within families rather than foster care.”

He also validated the R350 Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant’s 12-month continuation. On this, R44 billion will be spent.

The Old Age, Veterans, Disability, and Care Dependency Awards will increase by R10 more in April for a total increase of R90. The foster care and child support grants will each receive an R20 increase in April.

According to Godongwana, 46% of South Africans receive social prizes at the moment.
