Giving temporary assistance to persons who are in such extreme material need that they are unable to provide for their families’ most basic needs is known as social relief of distress.

This might be the case for any of the subsequent causes:

Help is needed for you. While you wait for your children’s grants to be processed
You are in a dreadful situation after a tragedy or disaster (such your home burning down), are unable to work for less than six months owing to a medical condition, and are not eligible to receive child support from the other parent of your child or children.

The family’s primary earner has passed away, received a brief prison sentence (less than six months), or you have experienced a calamity but your town or neighborhood has not been declared a disaster area.

What outcomes do you observe?

Food boxes or food vouchers are two examples of the Social Relief of Distress. Some provinces pay for this assistance. It is only possible to get Social Relief of Distress for a short period of time, often up to three months, which can be extended for an additional three months.

What you need to do.

Apply for social distress relief at the SASSA office that is most convenient for you or online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za.
