The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a program run by the South African government that offers financial aid to undergraduate students to help cover the cost of their higher education after they graduate from high school. The Department of Higher Education and Training is responsible for funding it. The scheme was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act 56 of 1999. We provide financial assistance in the form of bursaries and loans to eligible students at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

Nsfas allowance is Usually a process. Every year after the funding has been approved for students, Nsfas begins to credit the allowance to the successful applicant’s wallet on the Mynsfas account within the first week of every month.

 

WHAT THE BURSARY COVER

Allowances for accommodation, transport, living allowance, and learning materials differ for Universities and TVET Colleges.

The allowances for University are as follows:

  • Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university, costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

The allowances for TVET colleges are as follows:

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

 

Who qualifies for NSFAS Funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

 

Required Supporting Documents To Create NSFAS Account.

To complete your NSFAS Bursary Online Application for 2024-2025, you must have the following information:

  •  You must have a phone number and an email address of your own.
  • A copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
  •  You should also provide copies of your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s identification cards.
  • 1 year’s worth of IRP5 or proof of income (if applicable,)
  • Proof of income from your parents, guardians, or spouse
  •  SASSA grant beneficiaries are not required to show proof of income.
  •  All disabled applicants must present a completed and signed Disability Annexure. A Document
  •  All applicants who have been identified by the Department of Social Development as Vulnerable Children must also submit a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form. Application Status for NSFAS

  5. Update your personal information
  6. Answer the questions you see on the screen
  7. Upload all the required supporting documents
  8. Finally, you click on ‘submit

 

Who should not apply?

  • Students that have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified, and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).

Nsfas Payment Dates 2024-2025: Every year after funding has been approved for students, nsfas begins to disburse students’ allowances to the ewallet. The nsfas allowance is processed and credited to the student’s ewallet on the mynsfas account within the first 10 days of each month. It is important to note that not all students will get the allowance at the same time. The disbursement of the allowances is not simultaneous for all students. This means your friend may receive his or her allowances earlier than you. If you haven’t received your payment, keep checking as the money will eventually be credited to your nsfas ewallet.

 

What Does the NSFAS Cover?

The amounts given for housing, living allowance, transportation, and learning materials must be in accordance with the most recent DHET criteria.

Also, when you’re approved to receive the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding as a TVET College student, NSFAS covers your registration fees and tuition fees. The registration fees and tuition fees are defined by your institution per the academic semester or year.

 

REQUIRED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS

However, you’ll lose your NSFAS funding if you fail to meet the academic performance requirements.

  1. Provide your own cellphone number and email address
  2. You must have a copy of your ID or birth certificate
  3. National ID copies of parents, guardians, or spouse
  4. The evidence of your income or 1 year’s IRP5 if necessary
  5. The proof of income of your parents, guardian, or spouse.
  6. If you are a SASSA grant recipient, you don’t need to provide any evidence of income.
  7. All Applicants with a disability should provide and submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form
  8. An applicant who is known as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development should also provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
