Basic information on Sassa 2023-2024 may be found on this page. Please keep reading this page.

A temporary assistance program called social relief of distress is intended for those who are in such dire need of material goods that they are unable to provide for the most basic needs of their families or themselves.

Social Relief of Distress is available to South African nationals or permanent residents who fulfill one or more of the following criteria and have insufficient resources:

  • The applicant anticipates receiving payment of an authorized social aid.

  • For less than six months, the applicant has been deemed medically unable to undertake remunerative employment.

  • The application is submitted within three months following the breadwinner’s passing.

  • A parent, child, or spouse who is obligated by law to pay maintenance is not contacted, and there is proof that attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful.

  • The family’s primary provider has been admitted to a facility with state funding (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for older persons, treatment center for substance abuse, or child and youth care center).

  • The Catastrophe Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, both of which were passed in 1978, both of which define a disaster, have had an impact on the application.

  • The person is not receiving assistance from any other entity or person.

  • Applying for social alleviation of distress will save you from unnecessary misery.

Period of Social Relief of Distress (New Policy)

For a maximum of three months, Social Relief of Distress is distributed once every month. A further three-month extension may be given in rare cases.

It should be kept in mind that a person who receives a social grant cannot also receive support for social distress. The value of the social assistance must be returned by anyone who gets both grants and social assistance. All upcoming social aid payments, including arrears, will have this amount subtracted from them. However, if the recipient of a social grant also received disaster help, the money will not be returned.
