The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a South African government student financial aid scheme that provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school. It is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The scheme was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act 56 of 1999. We provide financial assistance in the form of bursaries and loans to eligible students at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

Nsfas Benefits For Applicants

University Students

  • Tuition Fees
  • Accommodation As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per year
  • Living allowance of R15,000  per year
  • Book allowances R5200 per year
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per year for students in catered residences

TVET College Students

  • Tuition Fees
  • Accommodation
    • Urban area R24,000 per year
    • Peri-urban area R18,900 per year
    • Rural area R15,750 per year
  • Transport
    • up to 40 km from the institution R7,350  per year
    • R7000 per year
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per year

NSFAS will also provide assistive devices & human support for applicants with disabilities.

Required Supporting Documents To Apply For NSFAS Online.

To complete your NSFAS Bursary Online Application for 2024-2025, you must have the following information:

  •  You must have a phone number and an email address of your own.
  • A copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
  •  You should also provide copies of your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s identification cards.
  • 1 year’s worth of IRP5 or proof of income (if applicable,)
  • Proof of income from your parents, guardians, or spouse
  •  SASSA grant beneficiaries are not required to show proof of income.
  •  All disabled applicants must present a completed and signed Disability Annexure. A Document
  •  All applicants who have been identified by the Department of Social Development as Vulnerable Children must also submit a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form. Application Status for NSFAS

How to Apply for NSFAS Online Application

  1. Visit the NSFAS Application website: www.nsfas.org.za
  2. Then, you click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
  3. Create a myNSFAS account. If you don’t know how to create, click HERE
  4. Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab
  5. Update your personal information
  6. Answer the questions you see on the screen
  7. Upload all the required supporting documents
  8. Finally, you click on ‘submit

Who qualifies for the NSFAS Funding?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
