The government of South Africa provides social handouts to residents in need. Social grants in South Africa are managed by SASSA. People who need government aid to raise their level of life and are at risk of sliding into poverty may be eligible for social grants. Parents with small children, the elderly, and those with disabilities are commonly included. A social grant must be requested by a South African national, authorized permanent resident, or refugee (proof of such status must be provided). Additionally, they must be residents of South Africa.

A “means test” is used to several social benefits, including child support, disability, care dependence, and social alleviation of distress. Based on your income and assets, SASSA will utilize the means test to assess if you qualify for a social grant. Your eligibility for a grant intended for persons who cannot afford to live independently is determined by the means test.
