Residents in need can apply for a variety of social support grants from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). They are now pushing caregivers to apply for this assistance in an effort to broaden their help.
The South African Social Security Agency distributes nearly 18 million rewards each month (Sassa). This excludes the more than 5 million individuals who will be eligible for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) payment in June 2024.
Sassa encourages non-parental caregivers to apply for the Extended Child Support Grant. Included in this are situations where one or both parents have passed away or when it is unknown where the other parent is.
The Extended Child Support Grant, according to the organization, was developed to prevent children without parents from having to go through the foster care system just because of financial constraints.
In order to be eligible for the Extended Child Support Grant, the caregiver must present the death certificates of both parents, or the primary parent’s death certificate along with an affidavit attesting to the fact that the other parent is not involved in the child’s care and that the other parent’s whereabouts are unknown.
