The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is distributed with the Minister of Finance’s approval and is administered in accordance with Section 32 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004). The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is designed for South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and Special Permit Holders between the ages of 18 and 60 who have insufficient means, are not eligible for or do not contribute to the UIF payment, and do not have access to other sources of income.

For SASSA to review an application, applicants or their representatives must confirm or provide the following information.

Verification that they have read and agree to the terms of the Declaration and Consent Documents
Number of personal information (cell phone number)
Information on Sustainable Employment and Lifestyle
Banking Details

It is crucial to note

Please be aware that all information will be provided electronically and that no files need to be uploaded. Please supply SASSA with a mobile number where we may reach you to update you on the status of your application. On this page, you can also keep an eye on the progress of your application. If your application is turned down, you have one month to file an appeal with the Department of Social Development. You will be given instructions on how to submit an appeal when you receive notification that your application has been rejected. The initial application will be rejected if no appeal is submitted for each month it is rejected.
