distress grant 2023-2024

A temporary form of assistance known as social relief of distress is available to people who are in such severe financial need that they cannot provide for the most basic necessities of themselves or their family.

Citizens and permanent residents of South Africa who satisfy one or more of the conditions below and have limited means, may apply for Social Relief of Distress.

The applicant anticipates receiving payment of an authorized social aid.
For less than six months, the applicant has been deemed medically unable to undertake remunerative work.
The application is submitted within three months of the breadwinner’s passing.
A parent, child, or spouse who is obligated by law to pay maintenance is not contacted, and there is proof that attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful.
The family’s primary provider has been admitted to a facility with state funding (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for older persons, treatment center for substance abuse, or child and youth care center).
The Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, both of which were passed in 1978, both of which define a disaster, have had an impact on the application.
The person is not receiving assistance from any other entity or person.
Applying for social alleviation of distress will save you from unnecessary misery.

Period of Social Relief of Distress (New Policy)

Social Relief of Distress is given out once every month for a maximum of three months. In exceptional circumstances, an additional three-month extension may be granted.

Keep in mind that someone who has received a social grant is not qualified to receive help for social distress.

Anyone who gets grants and social assistance is required to pay back the value of the social aid. All upcoming social aid payments, including arrears, will be reduced by this sum.

However, if the beneficiary of the social grant also received relief for the disaster, the money won’t be reimbursed.
