APS simply means Admission Points Score. The Admission Points Score (APS) is a simple calculation method that universities use to determine whether or not prospective students are qualified for a qualification.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ADMISSION POINT SCORE (APS)

Prospective students will need to meet the minimum APS in order to be considered for a specific program.

Normally, each matric topic for which you write an exam awards you points. Your grade in each subject will determine how many points you receive for that course. The sum of the points you acquire for each course makes up your APS score.

HOW TO CALCULATE UNISA APS. A SIMPLE WAY FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

For Prospective students to calculate their APS for UNISA, they will need to add their six subject percentages.

If incase you have more than six subjects, excluding Life Orientation.
The University of South Africa need you to have six subjects in total when calculating your APS for UNISA.

Generally, for each matric subject you write, you get a point. The points you get for each course will depend on the percentage you score in that particular subject. The APS is the total points you accumulate from each course.

Prospective students are required to meet the minimumAPS in order to be considered for a specific program at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Following the completion of the 2023 academic year, please take note of the following important information and dates for the 2024 academic year. REGISTRATION DETAILS

1.1 Registration opens on 15 January 2024 until 9 February 2024 (only online, off-campus registration will be allowed) for
returning/continuing students.

1.2 Access registration at https://www.uj.ac.za/admission-aid/registration/ and follow the step-by-step guide.

1.3 You will only be able to register off-campus. The University cannot guarantee your space, and it is important to register as
soon as possible to secure a place. Note that the registration dates may be adjusted in which case such details
published on the UJ website.

1.4 Students who have only second-semester modules that are outstanding will also be required to register during the
registration period in January 2024.

1.5 Please take note, that in the case of compulsory modules that have not been passed in the previous year, the registration
system has been set up to register those compulsory modules first. You may not register for modules where prerequirements are not met.

1.6 Students in contact programs who interrupt their studies are required to apply for special permission from the relevant
Faculty/College to continue their studies. Continuation of studies, after an interruption, is not guaranteed and may be subject
to conditions since certain qualifications are being phased out. For a full list of programs being phased out, please
consult your respective faculty yearbook https://www.uj.ac.za/faculties/.

1.7 Students may not attend lectures for a program or module if they are not registered for it.

1.8 Students must review their proof of registration, to ensure that their modules/program registration is correct for the
entire year. It remains the responsibility of the student to ensure correct registration.

Step 1: Go to the University of Johannesburg’s website and click the Admission > Apply for Admission link for applicants seeking undergraduate or graduate admission (UJ Online Application). Following that, you can choose your course of action and proceed to the registration, application, and document uploading stages. This link will take you to the Online Application System at the University of Johannesburg.

Step 2: Register for classes at the University of Johannesburg online. After clicking the link in step one above, you will be directed to the University of Johannesburg Online Application System form, where you must enter all required information. Individuals who are applying for the first time have never used the University of Johannesburg’s online application system before and do not already have accounts that allow them to log in using their username and password. If this is your first time applying, you must first register. You must provide your name, email address, password, the type of program you’re applying for, and your qualification mode during the registration stage.

Step 3 requires you to upload supporting documentation; all new qualification candidates must complete this step (all first-time applicants and University of Johannesburg students starting a new qualification). The application deadline coincides with the deadline for uploading the required files. Materials received after the application deadline will not be accepted. Scanners and other electronic equipment are not available at the University of Johannesburg. Before beginning the UJ Online Application procedure, please ensure that your documents have been scanned and uploaded to an electronic device.

After receiving your student ID, the fourth step is to pay the application fee through the University of Johannesburg. Use the reference number for your application fee, as well as your University of Johannesburg student number (ie STUDENT NUMBER 5370810030). After you have paid the fee, your application will be considered and processed. Please be aware that this fee is non-refundable.

It has come to our attention that there are individuals who pose as university employees or student representatives in an attempt to defraud our students. These individuals will promise to assist students with academic space, bursaries, student accommodation, and or registration assistance in exchange of cash. Once they are given the money, they will either vanish without a trace or use fraudulent credit cards to carry out their promises, the credit card transaction will at the end be reversed leaving the students with enormous debt.

The University of Johannesburg is a cashless environment, and no amount of money must be given to any of our staff members or student representatives to get any assistance. Students and parents are urged to always be alert and to only interact with the university using the official platforms. We also urge them to report any suspicious activities to our fraud line.

Applicants who are attending or have attended a University within or outside the Republic of South Africa must submit an academic transcript that covers the period of study, especially if they intend on being granted exemption from modules or courses at the University.

Degree-seeking students

In order to study for a South African degree applicants are required to have achieved a South African National Senior Certificate with a degree endorsement. All International applicants with high school qualifications achieved outside of the Republic of South Africa require a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into undergraduate studies. The following supporting documents must be submitted to the Matriculation Board at the address provided below;

You may apply online at www.uj.ac.za and follow a link to study @UJ to either apply online or you may download the Application form, which should either be submitted to the Student Enrolment Centre or mailed to the University. Online applicants are exempted from paying an application fee, whereas hardcopy applicants are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee of R200.

Provide proof of English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of lecturing (the University prefers the applicant to take the IELTS at an overall score of 7 and TOEFL at an average score of 105–120 for Postgraduate programs) Alternatively, you may elect to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP). Should you choose to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP), you are required to obtain an overall score of 7. Should you require on-campus accommodation, please submit a completed residence application form at the same time you apply to study at UJ

Applicants who are attending or have attended a University within or outside the Republic of South Africa must submit an academic transcript that covers the period of study to allow the assessment of the application for postgraduate studies.

UNIVERSITY FEES

Fees generally increase between 5 and 10 percent per year. Please contact the University in November 2024 to obtain the final fees for the 2025 academic year.

Please Note: All accepted International applicants are required by the Department of Home Affairs to provide proof of available funds for the full tuition fee of the academic year and proof of Medical Aid administered in South Africa paid for a full academic year of study prior to receiving their study visa.

All privately (i.e. Self, Parent/s or Guardian) funded international students are required to pay their tuition and residence fees (on-campus residences) as follows:

An upfront payment of 40% of tuition and residence fees must be paid before or at registration.
30% of the tuition and residence fees are to be paid by 30 April.
30% of the tuition and residence fees are to be paid by 31 July.

International levy 2025

The levies mentioned below are to be paid in line with the above-mentioned fees structural payment above together with the non-refundable International Levy, Registration fee, and ICT Levy. PLEASE NOTE that the International levy expires on 31 December of each year.

SADC- and other African Countries – (Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Full-time, Part-time) – R2 000-00
Other countries – R17 000.00
Occasional and Non-degree purposes/practical training – R8 000.00

The levies above are for 2024, the finalized International levies for the year 2025 will be published prior to registration.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) accommodation provides housing for students who wish to live on campus. Kindly Read on for more information on the application.

Important details regarding the Residence Application

Complete the academic application process first for first-time applicants, then use your student/reference number to complete the residence application as shown below.
For more information on student housing and residence life, please see this page.
You will be required to pay an R1220.00 residence deposit after being academically admitted to the university in January 2024 and receiving a letter of confirmation of placement in residence.
Acceptance into the residences does not imply acceptance into the University (depending on space availability)
You are only permitted to live on the campus where you are enrolled in classes.
Residence transfers are not permitted.
Only full-time curricular undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible to apply for a residence.
Online applications for residence are not available for first-time entering students aged 24 and up. A paper application form is available at the bottom of this page.

How to Guide a Residence Application Online

Step 1 | Enter your student number and pin to log in.
Step 2 | After logging in, expand the folder titled ‘Student Web Systems.’
Step 3: Open the ‘Application Process’ folder.
Step 4 | On the left, navigate to the ‘Application Process’ folder.
Step 5 | From the drop-down menu, select ‘Add New Residence Application’:
Step 6 | Before clicking the ‘Proceed With Application’ button, fill out the highlighted fields:
Step 7 | Click the “New Record” button to submit your application.
