• The government is recommending the establishment of the Basic Financial Grant as a measure to provide aid and relief to those in need. This grant would provide economic support to people between the ages of 18 and 59 who are struggling, unemployed, and do not qualify for social assistance.

• The basic income award is on the table, according to Lindiwe Sisulu, the chair of the Social Transformation Subcommittee, and there have been several discussions about it.

• This past weekend in Johannesburg, Sisulu made headlines for her remarks at the African National Congress (ANC) policy conference.

• “We were the committee that allowed us to offer them the R350 reward,” the statement continued. In order to deal with the basic income stipend, “we recognized it was possible to go beyond that,” Sisulu said.

• The R350 Grant was put into place as a temporary measure to assist persons in need during the lockdown and epidemic.

• The committee hopes the R350 award can be expanded and extended as a basic income grant in order to continue helping society’s most vulnerable citizens, Sisulu said.
